THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK AGAINST EDWARD NEWTON ROWELL. A TRIAL UPON AN INDICTMENT FOR MANSLAUGHTER IN THE FIRST DEGREE FOR KILLING JOHNSON LIVINGSTON LYNCH, OF UTICA, N.Y., AT BATAVIA, ... A classic case of murder resulting from the exposure of adultery in flagrante. Edward Newton Rowell suspected his wife of having an affair with their former neighbor, Johnson Lynch. In October 1883, he informed her that he would be leaving Batavia, New York, for several days on business, and after she had invited Lynch over and taken him to bed, Rowell burst in and shot him. The affair was apparently known to the public of Batavia, and such was the support for Rowell that he was acquitted on charges of manslaughter, the news of which was celebrated in town with bonfires and fireworks. Not in McDade or Cohen.
