Nathaniel Hayward 1808-1865 , a man without any training at all in chemistry, spent some years experimenting with ways to keep India rubber from becoming soft and sticky in summer. He first discovered the value of sulfur in rubber compounding in 1836. Continuing his experiments he subjected his sulfur-treated rubber to the heat of the sun's rays,
