Grant, held a variety of assignments during the Civil War, eventually rising to the rank of brigadier and brevet major general. This memoir describes his war service, which included action at Shiloh. Chetlain also recounts the early history of Galena, and his post-war experiences as a tax official in Utah, where he also had dealings with Indians, and as a diplomat in Belgium, where he met and befriended George Catlin.
