Second state of Blaeu's celebrated and influential map of Virginia, from the 1640 edition of Ex Theatrum Obis Terrarum. Dutch publishers, responding to the demand for Smith's map, contributed to the dissemination of information about Virginia. Jodocus Hondius's Nova Virginiae Tabula, printed in Amsterdam in 1618, was the first derivative of the Smith map. Willem Janszoon Blaeu purchased Hondius's plate in 1629 and used it with little alteration for the next forty-two
