Catalogus librorum manuscriptorum in bibliotheca Phillippica. Saville MSS. A handlist of a collection of 35 manuscripts originally belonging to the Savile family, acquired by Sir Thomas Phillipps at Sotheby's in 1861.This list is separate from Phillipps's main catalogue, the Catalogus librorum, which is numbered 1-23837. It was printed soon after Phillipps's acquisition at Sotheby's, but the items were never renumbered for inclusion in the main Catalogus during his lifetime. Munby noted: "I have seen a proof-sheet containing printed descriptions of manuscripts numbered 1-35 (eight more supplied by pen) headed "Saville MSS."... Each entry has written against it in pencil a Phillipps number above 23837 [i.e. the last published manuscript number], referring to the slip continuation of the catalogue. This was, I believe, started by Edward Bond of the British Museum" (p. 13). The manuscripts were gathered by Sir John Savile the Elder, an original member of the Society of Antiquaries in 1572, and his brother Sir Henry Savile, Provost of Eaton and friend of Sir Thomas Bodley.Provenance: Martin Schøyen.
