Jean Louis Berlandier was actually a native of France, joined the Mexican Boundary Commission as a zoologist and botanist studying the region's natural history. During his time studying the flora and fauna of the Mexico-Texas border, he also became fascinated with the indigenous people of the region. Berlandier settled in Matamoros after the survey, continuing his studies of natural history until he was drowned during a perilous crossing of the San Fernando River in 1851.
