Memorias Politicas, sobre as verdadeiras bases da grandeza das nações, e principalmente de Portugal: offerecidas ao serenissimo Principe do Brazil nosso Senhor. First edition of the sole book by the Portuguese economist (1753-1831), containing the first serious Portuguese analysis of the Wealth of Nations.Late 18th-century Portuguese writers generally engaged with the latest economic thought on a casual, case-by-case basis, usually as an aid to solving a particular issue facing their country. Although the first to engage systematically with Smithian economics, Brito, a late adaptor of physiocratic agrarianism, was not entirely sympathetic. He devotes a whole chapter of volume 1 to refuting Smith's labour theory of value, and later charged Smith with concealing the extent of his relationship with the Physiocrats.
