Crises and Cycles. Adapted from the German and Revised by Vera C. Smith. First edition in English of this proto-Keynesian argument for a government investment programme backed by credit expansion, originally published in German in 1932. Wilhelm Röpke (1899-1966) became a leading figure of German Neoliberalism and a prominent advisor in the post-War German social market economy. In this early work, written when he was a professor at Marburg, he advocates a strongly interventionist solution to the ongoing economic recession, the recession that would soon sweep the Nazis to power. Röpke's opposition to the new regime soon led to the loss of his position at Marburg, and he left shortly thereafter for Istanbul.
