Final Report of Gen. John J. Pershing, Commander-in-Chief American Expeditionary Forces. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on an initial blank, "For Major John C. Hughes, with sincere affection, John J. Pershing".John Chambers Hughes (1891-1971) served in France with the American Expeditionary Force from 1917 to 1919 and was appointed Pershing's aide-de-camp during the Meuse-Argonne offensive of September 1918. After the war, he returned to civilian life with the rank of major, became head of a textile firm, and in 1953 was appointed Permanent Representative to NATO by President Eisenhower.Submitted to the Secretary of War on 1 September 1919, the report was Pershing's official account of his command of American forces in the First World War. It was also published in Current History, where it was described as "the most important military document on our share in the world war" (Vol. 11, No. 2, 1920, p. 338).
