First edition, first impression, inscribed by Winston Churchill for his brother Jack and his wife Gwendoline on an earlier binder's blank, "Winston Churchill during the acute political situation of the spring of 1910". Jack's own inscription to Gwendoline is above: "To pass a few hours during this weary waiting. J. Easter 1908".Jack (1880-1947) was the only sibling of Winston, his younger by five years. Both brothers served in the Boer War and the First World War, Jack reaching the rank of major. He afterwards worked as a stockbroker. Gwendoline (1885-1941) was the daughter of the Earl and Countess of Abingdon and the centre of an artistic and literary circle including Hilaire Belloc, J. M. Barrie, and William Orpen.
