£750 · Offered by Peter Harrington · No longer available
A manuscript copy of Buzakki hochu ("A Commentary on Miscellaneous Notes about Warriors"). A bright manuscript copy introducing the customs that must be mastered by the samurai class, such as how to display one's armour, properly hold a zither, or set out the highly formalized shiki-sankon dining ritual. The research was conducted by Ise Sadatake, the historian and advisor on court etiquette, with additional commentary by the poet and warrior Nagasawa Tomo'o.Ise (1718-1784) compiled his notes on samurai customs in 1759, in a manuscript titled Buzakki-sho. This circulated and was copied until 1847, when Nagasawa (1808-1859) published it with his commentary as Buzakki hochu. In this manuscript the illustrations are placed together at the rear of the second volume, as opposed to appearing throughout the text. Red annotations indicate the parts of the text that each illustration relates to.
