An archive recording to his service with the 2nd King Edward VII's Own Gurkha Rifles. A wide-ranging collection compiled over a 25-year career. It is split into two main parts: a set of documents relating to the publication of Neill's memoir of the Third Battle of Tamandu, and orders, newsletters, and record books from his time as battalion commander and head of the Brigade of Gurkhas Training Centre.Neill (1921-1999) joined the 2nd Gurkhas in 1941, serving with the 3rd Battalion in Burma on Operation Longcloth, the first major expedition organised by Orde Wingate. He earned his Military Cross at the Battle of Snowdon-East, otherwise known as the Third Battle of Tamandu. After the Second World War he became chief instructor at the Far East Land Forces Jungle Warfare School and at Sandhurst, before taking command of the 2nd Battalion in 1963. In 1965 he transferred to run the Brigade of Gurkhas Training Centre at Sungei Patani. The first part of this archive relates to his 1962 article, "Third Battalion at Tamandu: The Battle of Snowdon East", published in The Journal of the 2nd King Edward VII's Own Goorkhas, Volume 5, Number 4. It includes a manuscript and corrected typescript draft, correspondence with the editor, and 11 photographs. One of these, a portrait shot of Bhanbhagta Gurung, was used in the article. Gurung was a private who was awarded the Victoria Cross for single-handedly clearing two trenches and a machine-gun bunker during the battle. The second part is document
