Coloured Figures of the Birds of the British Islands. First complete edition in book form, handsomely bound by Rivière. The plates had initially been published in 36 parts with the complete and finished series being issued in 1897.The works are an assemblage from the golden age of chromolithography. Thorburn, responsible for 264 of the plates, took over from Keulemans, and this is the work that established his reputation as the foremost ornithological artist of his day. "[Lord Lilford's] aviaries at Lilford Park in Northamptonshire were the envy of field ornithologists, and especially noted for the collection of birds of prey" (ODNB).
