Sand and Foam: A Book of Aphorisms. First trade edition. This follow-up publication to The Prophet (1923) includes the memorable line "half of what I say is meaningless; but I say it so that the other half may reach you", borrowed by John Lennon for his song, "Julia".The book is beautifully illustrated with plates and ornaments designed to provide a momentary pause for reflection between each aphorism. Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) instructed that the work be printed "in the same manner as the manuscript" (Jean Gibran, p. 384).Born in Lebanon, Gibran emigrated to the US at a young age and became a leading member of the Pen League, a circle of Arab writers based in New York. The Prophet was heralded as a bible to the 1960s countercultural movement.
