The Works. First collected edition of Molière in English, finely bound.During 14 years of activity as an actor and playwright in Paris, Molière (1622-1673) transformed French comedy through the use of an intensely physical comic method which has "little recourse to technical resources and gives full scope to the prowess of the actor" (Barham & Brandon, p. 757). Molière's work allowed French farce to become "a satiric commentary on the society of his time and a penetrating exploration of eternal human foibles and obsessive attitudes of mind. In his hands their absurdity never ceases to amuse" (Barham & Brandon, p. 757).
