The Reform Movement in China, 1898-1912. By Meribeth E. Cameron. First edition, with Johnston's London ownership inscription, dated August 1932, on the front free endpaper, his attractive bookplate, and occasional pencilled marginalia. Johnston references this monograph in his classic work, Twilight in the Forbidden City (1934), though remarks that "I do not concur, however, in all the views of the author, especially with regard to the abilities and 'educability' of the empress-dowager."After overseeing the return of Weihaiwei to China in 1930, Johnston returned to Britain and accepted a professorship at the University of London. His bookplate references the Lejingshanzhai, his private residence in Beijing. An American sinologist, Meribeth Cameron (1905-1997) received her PhD from Stanford in 1928. In 1941, she co-founded the Far Eastern Quarterly, now the Journal of Asian Studies.
