A courageous and left-wing journalist, Smedley reported from Mao's base at Yan'an and from the front lines of the Second World War while embedded with the communist Eighth Route and New Fourth armies.Battle Hymn of China "transformed brutality and suffering into gripping narratives of lasting power and beauty" (Price, p. 423). It was published in August 1943, going through three printings even before the official publication date.
