In his introduction to this edition, Ripley Hitchcock stated that the work had "established itself as the most brilliant general version of the history of our country".The Documentary Edition was also known as the "Autographed Edition", as the spines here are lettered. Published after Wilson's re-election and the United States' entry into the First World War, the edition is extensively illustrated with reproductions of original sources.The limitation notice records the subscriber as George S. Hamilton.
