INDIAN REBELLION.

£1,250 · Offered by Peter Harrington

Stanford's Special Map of the Revolted Districts of British India, First edition. Centred on Delhi, the map is bounded by the Himalayas in the north and Khandesh in the south. The route of the Great Indian Peninsular Railway, the first passenger railway in the country, is highlighted in red and the East Indian Railway in blue. Major military stations are underlined, such as Meerut, the garrison that saw the first mutiny, and Lucknow. The siege of Delhi from June to September 1857 was perhaps the decisive conflict of the rebellion. Maps such as these would have given context to the British public as they read about one of the major crises that the empire faced in the 19th century. We have traced four institutional copies: the British Library, University of Oxford, Bibliotheek Deventer, and University of Minnesota.
