First edition of this cultural and historical study for residents and travellers, illustrated with photographic plates of the West Lake and other famous views, and including a lengthy paraphrase of the Legend of the White Snake, the most well-known folk tale to come from the Hangzhou region. The author served as the American vice-consul in Shanghai.In preparing the work, Cloud received assistance several influential foreign residents, including George Moule, the Anglican bishop of mid-China, and John-Leighton Stuart, by far the most influential figure in Sino-US relations before 1949.
