The author served as the prison psychologist at Nuremberg, conducting interviews and evaluations of the defendants that established their fitness to stand trial and yielded vital new prosecutorial lines of attack. He published Nuremberg Diary, a narrative of his experiences, in 1947.Gilbert was born to Austrian-Jewish immigrants and obtained his PhD in psychology from Columbia University in 1939. He was sent to Nuremberg because of his knowledge of German and service in the war as a first lieutenant in the American army. He gives psychological profiles of defendants, attempts a posthumous profile of Hitler, and writes on the popular appeal of dictatorship.
