First Edition. 1 vol, 12mo, (7 1/2" x 5 1/4"), pp. viii, 112, [8 ads]. Original yellow pictorial cloth boards, now heavily worn and modified. Includes 12 plates. Poor condition. This is an ex-library copy from the Public Library of Louisville, Kentucky, containing multiple library stamps and hole-punches, notably on the title page and page 43. The exterior is heavily rubbed with the front cover illustration faded, and the spine and board edges have been reinforced with brown tape. A library call number and title are hand-painted in white on the taped spine. The internal leaves are browned with age and exhibit various tape repairs to the edges and gutters, where loose pages have been reinserted. John Gregory Bourke (1844–1896) was not only a distinguished soldier but also one of the foremost ethnologists of the 19th-century American West. Serving under General George Crook, Bourke participated in the most grueling campaigns of the Indian Wars. This work, An Apache Campaign, is his definitive primary account of the 1883 expedition that crossed the international border into the Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico. The mission was a daring attempt to root out the Chiricahua Apaches, led by figures such as Geronimo and Chato, from their nearly inaccessible mountain sanctuaries. Bourke’s narrat
