Published in 1988, Cradle is a collaboration between the legendary Arthur C. Clarke and NASA scientist Gentry Lee. It blends a high-stakes techno-thriller with classic first-contact science fiction. The Mystery: A Missing Missile The story is set in the near-future (for the time) of 1994. The U.S. Navy tests a high-tech experimental missile that mysteriously vanishes. If it strikes a populated area, the consequences will be catastrophic. The Investigation Carol Dawson, an ambitious journalist, notices strange behavior among whales off the Florida coast. Suspecting a connection to the missing missile, she hires Nick Williams and Jefferson Troy, two treasure hunters with a boat, to investigate the ocean floor. The Discovery Instead of a missile, the team discovers a massive, ancient alien artifact hidden in the depths. As they dive deeper into the mystery: They realize they aren't alone; a damaged alien spacecraft is hidden on the sea floor, crewed by shape-shifting robots. The ship is attempting to repair itself and needs resources like gold and lead—which it asks the humans to help provide. The "Cradle" of the title is revealed to be a container holding genetically enhanced human embryos, taken from Earth millions of years ago and designed to survive alongside other alien species.
