Association Copy Inscribed to Tony Hillerman – Small/Rare “For Friends” Printing PICKENS, Homer C. Tracks Across New Mexico. Privately printed “for friends” edition (not commercially distributed). Signed and warmly inscribed by the author to Tony Hillerman (author of Dark Winds): “To my friend of many years Tony Hillerman Even before there was a Round House in Old Santa Fe and of course when Ed Mechem was Governor Best Wishes Homer” A highly desirable association copy, directly linking Homer C. Pickens with Tony Hillerman, recounting a personal relationship between the man who rescued and raised Smokey the Bear, and noted Southwestern author Tony Hillerman. The book (later re-printed 2008 by Sunstone Press for general sale and still in print) is a charming series of stories about mid-20th-century life as a New Mexico Game and Fish ranger. The inscription to Hillerman references the era prior to construction of the State Capitol (“Roundhouse,” completed 1966) and the governorship of Edwin L. Mechem (1950s and early 60s). Yes, there must be another story there.....:-) The book is a privately issued “for friends” special printing, produced in a small quantity prior to the more voluminous Sunstone printing. While Hillerman signed many books during his lifetime, books owned by him—especially expressing meaningful personal context—are scarce and increasingly collected. The appraiser I consulted told me that this is incredibly collectible, and not to accept a price in the low hundre
