Charles Edward Mathews was president of the Alpine Club. The author (1834-1905) had climbed the mountain himself a dozen times from 1856-1898 and he covers the history of climbing this peak from the late 1700s up to the late nineteenth century. This title also contains a chapter on the geology of Mont Blanc written by Professor T.G. Bonney. First American edition; 8vo (23 x 16 cm); photographic frontispiece, numerous photographic illustrations, folded map at rear, bookplates, black ink markings on endpapers, some slight staining on a few plates; publisher's original black cloth gilt, edges uncut,touch of rubbing, overall a very good copy; xxiv, 367 pp.
