One of the few English books with references to Hainan which is the tropical island located in the southernmost tip of China. It was often called the Hawaii of the East. The author, a missionary, spent the bulk of his career in China was spent in what was then commonly known as Ling-nam, the Pearl River Delta and environs of Guangzhou (Canton). This book contains detailed walking tours of this area. First edition; 8vo (20 x 15 cm); illustrations throughout (some full-page), including a frontispiece, illustrated title-page and 3 double-page maps, prize plate on front free endpaper, some marginal spotting to the title-page and the fore-edge, inner hinges slightly cracked, decorated endpapers; publisher's blue gilt pictorial cloth, a little wear to extremities, a slightly shaken but otherwise very good copy.
