signed by Churchill The New Examen was first published in 1861 by barrister John Paget. The essays covered key events of the late Stuart period, namely The Duke of Marlborough, the Massacre of Glencoe, the Highlands of Scotland, Viscount Dundee, William Penn and the Wigtown Martyrs. Winston Churchill endeavoured to have the historical essays brought into the public eye and so backed a re-issue of its publication with his own introduction, which contained an implicit defence of the Duke of Marlborough. This copy was a special, limited edition which was signed by Churchill himself. Limited edition, one of a small number of copies believed to be 50 signed by Churchill, this being number 17; Royal 8vo (260 x 175mm); printed on English hand-made paper by Sherratt Hughes at the St. Ann's Press, Manchester, contemporary ownership inscription to front pastedown, publisher's imprint to limitation page and p.135, a very small mark to p.35, not affecting text, else very good; publisher's full Niger morocco by Sangorski Sutcliffe, bound with raised bands and blind-tooled motifs, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, some minor abrasions or marks causing darker tones to boards, spine a little faded, very light signs of general wear, else very good; [xvi], 236pp.
