£100 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books

First edition, first impression of this volume on the demographics and culture of China, illustrated by both Cecil Beaton and the Isotype Institute founded by Otto and Marie Neurath. Otto and Marie Neurath were the founders of Isotype, a simplified visual method for conveying complex information. First developed in the 1920s, Isotype 'helped establish some of the core principles of graphic design' and its legacy 'can be seen everywhere from newspapers and textbooks to signage, transit maps, interfaces, and emojis' (Inglis, 'Meet Marie Neurath', AIGA Eye on Design, September 17, 2019). First edition, first impression; 8vo; 16 double-sided monochrome plates from photographs, 4 double-sided colour charts, corner of front free endpaper clipped, spotting to edges of text block and early and late leaves; original green cloth, title to spine and pictorial design to upper board gilt, a very good copy in the price-clipped and rubbed jacket with a chip from the head of the tanned spine panel and some other chips and short splits; 144pp.
