This book was originally published in 1954 as Montgomery’s Christmas Annual, a privately produced, 64-page Sherlockian monograph. The Magico book is a reprint of the Christmas Annual, but still a First Edition of their issue. The book is a history of how Sherlock Holmes came to look like “Sherlock Holmes.” And discusses Sidney Paget’s enormously influential drawings for The Strand Magazine; American illustrators such as Frederic Dorr Steele; the development of Holmes’s recognizable profile, clothing, deerstalker hat and other visual symbols; differences among British and American portrayals; and more.
