Jean Henri Fabre (1823-1915) passa le brevet supérieur École normale primaire à Avignon en 1842 et fut ensuite embauché à Carpentras comme instructeur. Il passa ensuite une double licence en sciences en mathématique et en physique et prit le poste d instructeur à Ajaccio l année suivante où il resta jusqu en 1851. En 1854 il défendit sa thèse pour son doctorat ès sciences naturelles et consacra depuis son temps à la recherche en entomologie. « In 1856 Fabre was awarded the Prix Montyon (for experimental physiology) of the Institut de France, and in 1859, Charles Darwin cited him in his Origin of Species, a valuable encouragement for a poorly paid young teacher .
