Quarto, full polished calf by Riviere and Sons, with their binder s stamp, spine in compartments with raised bands, ruled and ornamented in gilt, contrasting morocco title label lettered in gilt, light edge rubbing and a few small marks, all edges gilt, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, bookplate for Sondley Reference Library, North Carolina, to front pastedown, ownership inscription of Sondley to preliminaries, dated 1921, a couple of library blind stamps, pp. xvi; 416, decorative initials, head and tail pieces, with four original photographs bound in. A finely bound volume of the works of the notable eighteenth century Cambridge poet, best known for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard , first published in 1751. Foster Sondley was a North Carolina born lawyer who provided legal advice to George Vanderbilt as the Biltmore Estate in Buncombe County was being created. He never married and upon his death willed his collection of 34,000 volumes to the Pack Memorial Library in Asheville, North Carolina. The size and scope of the collection was across purposes of the city library and in the late 1980s the majority of the collection was sold.
