This short but inclusive study gives a synthesis of the general results of live journeys in the Chinantla region of the state of Oaxaca, 1934-1936, made principally by the author and Irmgard Weitlaner. It deals primarily with ecologic and economic details, and presents an excellent historic summary together with an inclusive bibliography and list of Chinantec manuscripts. Bevan's work is particularly valuable from a geographic viewpoint; trails, trade routes, and excellent territorial delimitations are give on numerous sketch maps, as well as descriptive material. Population and monolinguality figures are given for the most important villages. George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus.
