Since that was published, thee have come to light substantial masses of new material of particular importance for demographic studies of sixteenth-century Mexico. The most important discoveries were that of a large part of the second Spanish Register of Tributes and the discovery of further records of the civil congregations of Indians at the end of the sixteenth century. New material on the population of the province of Tlaxacala, one of the areas on which fiscal materials provide little demographic information, has also been published. The new materials gives us a clearer understanding of the administrative systems of the sixteenth-century Mexico have enabled us to interpret the sources.
