Large quarto (280 x 230 mm), recent half morocco over marbled papered boards, spine with raised bands decorated and lettered in gilt; pp. 132 + [8] leaves of lithographed plates; the text is dated January-February 1854 at the foot of the last page; occasional spotting and browning, a couple of text leaves remargined at bottom edge; otherwise very good throughout. Pieter Bleeker (1819-1878) was a Dutch medical doctor, ichthyologist, and herpetologist, best known for the Atlas Ichthyologique des Indes Orientales Néêrlandaises , his monumental work on the fishes of East Asia published between 1862 and 1877.
