Folio, contemporary sheep (scuffed), spine in compartments with raised bands, gilt tooling, contrasting gilt lettered morocco title label, half-title and title pages, eight additional preliminary leaves, pp. 458; (2 index), the pagination with various errors (pp. 66, 270 and 343 each misnumbered twice, pp. 352 355 bound in reverse order, p. 117 misnumbered as 517, p. 386 misnumbered as 356, 433 skipped in the numbering), marginal water stains to the final few leaves, some browning to the paper, ornamental initials, head- and tail-pieces, overall a very good copy. Collated and complete. First edition, printed posthumously, of Ferreira s account of the Jesuit mission in Tonkin and Cochinchina (modern day Vietnam), where had arrived in 1694 after serving at other missions in the East Indies. Ferreira s work concerns the establishment of the Jesuit mission, the baptising of the local population, the persecution and martyrdom Christian missionaries, and a general description of the region and the habits and customs of its people.
