Octavo, contemporary half calf over dark brown linen boards (rubbed and lightly marked, corners worn), spine with raised bands lettered and ruled in gilt (some wear to the bands, head and tail), front pastedown with full signature of the original owner, American diplomat in China J.C.A. Wingate, his initials also to title, pp [iv], iv, 696, lxiv (last leaf blank), 1 errata slip; hinges cracked (title leaf starting to loosen from text block), very clean throughout; a good copy. English clergyman John Henry Gray (1823-1890) was a consular chaplain at Canton (Guangzhou) and from 1868 until his death served as the inaugural Archdeacon of Hong Kong. He wrote several works on Chinese subjects, the most notable being China: a History of the Laws, Manners and Customs of the People (1878). His Walks in the city of Canton vividly brings to life Guangzhou of the 1870s. It provides a detailed survey of the city s history and society, before offering the reader seven itineraries for walking tours, each covering different locations and sights.
