Prétendument traduit de l anglais, l originale fut en réalité rédigée en italien par Zaccaria Seriman en 1749 à Venise. L auteur, notable vénitien d origine arménienne, est considéré comme l un des précurseurs de la science-fiction italienne. On y trouve une transposition de la vie mondaine vénitiens aux monstres localisés aux antipodes. « An ideal work, abounding with character, sentiment and philosophical observation » (Sabin, pour l édition anglaise de 1772). L illustration comprend un frontispice et 12 planches gravés par Patino mettant en scène la vie des singes aux Antipodes.
