Une partie importante de l ouvrage est consacrée à l étude du Japon, et on trouve notamment au dernier chapitre l important catalogue de la flore japonaise : Plantarum Japonicarum, quas Rerum peragranti solum natale conspiciendas objecit, nomina characteres sinicos; intermixtis, pro specimine, quarundam plenis descriptionibus, una cum Iconibus . L auteur faisait partie de l ambassade suédoise de 1683 auprès du Shah de Perse. Depuis Ispahan, il a rejoint la Compagnie néerlandaise des Indes orientales en tant que médecin à la station de la compagnie à Bandar Abbas. Il a atteint Java en 1689 et a rejoint le voyage annuel vers le Japon l année suivante ; il a passé deux ans au Japon, principalement à Nagasaki, mais a visité Edo deux fois. « It is an extremely important book botanically because of Fasc.
