Jean-Hyacinthe de Magellan (1722-1790), arrière petit-fils du célèbre navigateur et physicien portugais, se converti au protestantisme et s installa en Angleterre vers 1764. Il fut membre de plusieurs sociétés savantes dont la célèbre Royal Society de Londres. Son traité, décrivant un appareil en verre pour composer des eaux minérales artificielles, est illustré d une planche gravée en regard du titre représentant 24 figures. « [With] the author s letter to Priestley describing the glass vessels for impregnating water with fixed air which were made and improved by Mr. Parker. Detailed directions are given for the use of the apparatus and for the preparation of the various artificial mineral waters. The author repeatedly cites Bergman and his analyses of mineral waters » (Cole).
