Hobart : James Ross and George Howe, Government Printers, 1837. A virtually complete run of 51 issues for 1837: vol. XXII, no. 1075, January 6, 1837 vol. XXII, no. 1126, December 29, 1837 (missing no. 1078; but including the Extraordinary issue of July 11 1837). Quarto, all issues stitch bound, various paginations; a number of issues with supplements (Government acts or proclamations); all pages of the mourning issue for William IV (October 27) set within heavy black borders; some issues inscribed Hamilton, Van Diemen s Land ; no. 1119 with small amount of silverfish damage; no. 1126 with browning and water staining; expected amount of mild foxing and toning throughout, but overall a very good and virtually complete run of issues for 1837; housed in a pair of matching cloth covered clamshell boxes, spines with leather title labels lettered in gilt. The Hobart Town Gazette, and Southern Reporter (later simply known as the Hobart Town Gazette ) commenced publication in June, 1816, and was issued weekly, appearing every Saturday. James Ross arrived in Hobart from Scotland as a free settler in December 1822, and was granted 1000 acres of land on the River Shannon. After founding a school near Hobart and acting as tutor to Governor Arthur s children, Ross was appointed joint Government Printer with George Howe and from June 1825 he and Howe published the Gazette together, until Ross took over sole printing duties in February 1827.
