Hobart : James Ross and George Howe, Government Printers, 1835. A complete run of 52 issues for 1835: vol. XX, no. 970, January 1, 1835 vol. XIX, no. 1021, December 25, 1835. Quarto, all issues stitch bound, various paginations; a number of issues with supplements (Government acts); some issues with subscriber s name [H.B. Fortesse] Police Officer, Hamilton; no. 1021 lacking first 2 leaves; expected amount of mild foxing and toning throughout, but overall a very good and complete run of issues for 1835; housed in a pair of matching cloth covered clamshell boxes, spines with leather title labels lettered in gilt. The Hobart Town Gazette, and Southern Reporter (later simply known as the Hobart Town Gazette ) commenced publication in June, 1816, and was issued weekly, appearing every Saturday. James Ross arrived in Hobart from Scotland as a free settler in December 1822, and was granted 1000 acres of land on the River Shannon. After founding a school near Hobart and acting as tutor to Governor Arthur s children, Ross was appointed joint Government Printer with George Howe and from June 1825 he and Howe published the Gazette together, until Ross took over sole printing duties in February 1827. This complete run of issues of the Gazette for the year 1835 contains a vast amount of information on the development of Hobart and its society of the period.
