Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6"). bound in original publisher's blue-green cloth decoratively blind-stamped stamped with gilt lettering to spine. Translated from the third Paris edition of the previous year. (Howes: C359) First American edition. Michel Chevalier, later a well-known economist, went to America to study public works for the French government. He spent two years in America, from 1833 to 1835. He had "a reputation among his contemporaries equal to that of de Tocqueville and Gustave de Beaumont," according to Monaghan, and his book "still remains as one of the most important French commentaries on the Untied States." He traveled extensively in the Northeast and South, including Virginia, South Carolina and New Orleans. Condition: Spine ends professionally restored, corners bumped, previous owner's name on front end paper in pencil. A very good copy.
