Small octavo (7 7/8" x 5 1/4"). Issued in decorative cloth with gilt lettering to spine. First English edition in a custom made slipcase. Friedrich Gerstäcker was a German traveler and novelist. After being apprenticed to a commercial house, he learned farming in Saxony, but in 1837 engaged as a cabin-boy on a vessel bound from Bremen to New York. In America he wandered over a large part of the United States, supporting himself by whatever work came to hand. After wandering through most of the United States, spending some time as a hunter and trapper in the Indian territory, and in 1842 keeping a hotel at Point Coupée, Louisiana. His writings—in the form of essays, short stories, and novels—provide insights into folkways, social conditions, popular religion, gender roles, and a host of other topics relating to backwoods life in Arkansas. After his return to Germany, Gerstäcker began a career as a writer, based initially on his American experiences. Condition: Inner hinges cracked, corners bumped and rubbed, rubbing to extremities, embossed gilt stamping on spine dulled, previous owner name on front paste downs else good to very good.
