Octavo (215 x 140 mm), original red cloth with black lettering to spine, in the publisher s orange dust jacket with black type (fine and bright); front free-endpaper with early ownership signature, title page signed in black ink by the author Miles Franklin , pp. 500; spotting to edges, moderate foxing to preliminaries and first and last few leaves of text, else clean throughout; a desirable signed copy of the first edition. All that swagger is based on the experience of Franklin s own forebears who emigrated from Ireland and settled in the Monaro district of New South Wales in the mid-nineteenth century. The novel was awarded the S. H. Prior Memorial Prize in 1936.
