As a co-founder of Printed Matter in the 1970s, Lewitt was a crucial proponent of the artist book as a legitimate and compelling artistic medium, advocating the fact that it provides artists with a relatively inexpensive means of exposing their work to a diverse and expansive audience. The artist book became a critical part of Lewitt’s own practice, which in many ways focused on deconstructing notions of individual authorship and working collaboratively with other individuals to produce the final work. This book of thirty black and white photographs of a brick wall at different times of the day reflects Lewitt’s interest in Edward Muybridge’s photographic studies of humans and animals in motion, as well as his ongoing investigation of serial systems and modular repetition.
