Landau carriage, Hobart, late 1920s.

A$60 · Offered by Douglas Stewart Fine Books

Gelatin silver print photograph, 120 x 200 mm, laid down on its original card mount; the image has an early inscription in black ink In Hobart, Tas. Feb. 29 , and in later blue pen the date 1925 has been written twice; the verso of the mount has a faded newspaper cutting from the period with a potted history of the Landau. The cabman in this photograph appears to be Alfred Hope, who in 1929 was, along with a few others including Dodger Broughton, one of the last remaining owner-drivers of that once-popular Hobart conveyance, the horse-drawn cab.
