Folio (330 x 260 mm), bifolium (detached), [4] pages, the front with title and imprint and a colour design featuring a French tricolour flag with the royal crest of Napoleon III (Emperor of the French, 1852-70), 2 pages of music notation, last side blank; discreet stamp of the Bruckner-Konservatorium (Linz) to upper margin of [3], but clean and complete. Rare sheet music from the series Vaterlandslieder , by the German composer and pianist Ferdinand Beyer (Querfurt, 25 July 1803 Mainz, 14 May 1863). This series comprised at least 75 separately issued pieces of sheet music, the first of which was published in 1848, and the majority of which were arrangements by Beyer of national anthems or patriotic songs for pianoforte. The series drew on music from every conceivable corner of the globe, and it was continued after Ferdinand s death by his son, Victor (cf. no. 65: Hawai i Pono i by Henry Berger, arranged by V. Beyer). Whether the composition Gesang von der Insel Nukahiwa / Chant de Nukahiva was an entirely original piece by Ferdinand Beyer a work of complete fantasy, in other words or it was inspired by a Marquesan melody (which is doubtful) is not clear.
