We cannot tell you why this handsome collection of Japanese home dishes has the word “cult” in the title. It’s simply one of the mysteries of publishing. Tokyo-born-and-bred, Murota moved to Paris to work in fashion but edged into the food world, offering cooking classes to friends and working as a chef at a pair of restaurants before becoming a caterer. What she offers here seems the kind of food one might eat in the home of a good cook in Tokyo, largely traditional but with some contemporary international inflections. You’ll find an array of pickled vegetables, onigiri rice balls, and a beef hot pot, along with a matcha and white chocolate loaf cake, spaghetti “napolitan,” and a teriyaki chicken burger.
