Edo [Tokyo], Japan : 高木耕藏 [Takagi Kōzō], Kaei 5 [1852]. Hand coloured woodblock print, original covers with facsimile title label, map with some silverfishing, repaired with Japanese tissue. A pseudocylindrical projection map showing the world centred on Japan. Includes preface by written by 北海半嶋漁人 [Hokkai Hantō Ryōjin] and legend with date and publisher information. 新發田収藏 [Shibata Shūzō] (1820-59) was a doctor and seal carver of Sado Island whose interest in cartography led to the publication of this map, as well as 蝦夷接壤圖 [Ezo setsujō zenzu] [Map of Hokkaido and Adjoining Areas] in 1854. He was later employed by the Astronomy Institute of the Edo Government and contributed to the compilation of 重訂萬國全圖 [Jūtei Bankoku Zenzu ] [Revised Map of the World] made by 山路階孝 [Yamaji Yukitaka] (1777-1861) in 1855.
