Something of a Renaissance man, Alden was also founder of the New York Canoe Club, the first canoeing orgaisation in America, and co-founder of the American Canoe Association. Between 1885 and 1890 he served as the American Consul General in Rome. Copies are recorded in four Australian collections (Monash University Library; National Library of Australia; State Library of New South Wales; State Library of Victoria).
